Description:
Valves typically 'Hantzschia-shaped' as has been commonly found within this genus (L 75-90µm, W 6-8µm, 15-16 striae in 10µm, 5-7 fibulae in 10µm). Head poles straight. Two fibulae more spaced in the middle than the neighbouring fibulae. Transapical striae in the middle slightly radiate, more parallel towards the poles. The raphe keel is elevated. External raphe branches continuous, clearly curved in the middle. Internally, the central raphe endings are bent towards the same side.

Jardin Japonais, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BA0 (coll. date /11/1999).Only common in acid, relatively wet (50-60%) soil samples, mostly taken in the area of Jardin Japonais, close to some penguin rookeries. Nutrient and salinity values elevated.Only found on Ile de la Possession.Appears always longer in samples than H. amphioxys while the poles are non curved but straight. The new taxon can easily be confused with H. abundans Lange-Bertalot but can be distinguished by the different structure of the external central raphe endings. These endings are clearly curved while H. abundans shows almost straight central endings.
