Length: | 45-114.5 µm |
Width: | 8-11 µm |
Striae: | 19-20.5 per 10 micrometers at the center; 20.5-23 per 10 micrometers at the ends |
Description:
Valves linear-lanceolate, narrowing towards the produced endings; dorsal margin parallel to slightly convex; ventral margin slightly concave. Raphe eccentric, stretching along the valve margin and biarcuate (closer to the ventral margin centrally than near the poles). Striae parallel throughout; more widely spaced at the center of the valve. Fibulae (keel puncta) variable in size and spacing. This diatom is similar to Hantzschia sp. #1, but is wider, has less capitate endings, and has a less convex valve mantle. Ko-Bayashi (1965) illustrates a similar species which he calls Hantzschia amphioxys var. recta. However, the original description of var. recta has a size range of 20-49 micrometers, while Ko-Bayashi's specimens had a length of 60-120 micrometers. Although Ko-Bayashi's specimens have straighter margins than ours, we feel his identification was inaccurate. Instead, it appears that Ko-Bayashi's specimens are more closely related to our own, which we feel is a new species of Hantzschia.
