Description:

Valves typically 'hantzschia'-shaped with clearly bent head poles (L 21-50µm, W 4,5-7µm, 24-29 striae in 10µm, 7-11 fibulae in 10µm). Fibulae in the middle clearly more spaced. Transapical striae slightly radiate in the middle, more parallel towards the poles. Proximal raphe endings bent towards opposite sides (only in SEM visible).

Morphology: Nitzschioid

Notes:

Rare. Present in dry mosses and dry soils. Seems to prefer drier and less disturbed (no animal influence!) soils than H. possessionensis.Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region, probably one of the most recorded taxa.
