Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 49-94 µm
Width: 7-9.5 µm
Striae: 18-20 in 10 µm at the center; 19-22.5 in 10 µm at the ends

Description:

Valves linear-lanceolate, narrowing towards the produced, capitate endings which are flexed outwards (i.e. valve mantle is concave); dorsal margin parallel to slightly convex; ventral margin slightly concave.  Raphe eccentric, stretching along the valve margin and biarcuate (closer to the ventral margin centrally than near the poles); proximal raphe ending continuous (i.e. unbroken raphe slit) and deflected towards the ventral margin; distal raphe endings hooked towards the dorsal margin.  Raphe canal slightly thickened in the central portion of the valve.  Striae more widely spaced at the center of the valve; striae slightly radiate in the center, becoming parallel to convergent towards the ends.  Fibulae (keel puncta) variable in size and spacing. Ko-Bayashi (1965) appears to have identified this same diatom which he calls Hantzschia amphioxys var. linearis.  However, the original description for var. linearis is with a length of 143-172 micrometers, and therefore, it does not appear that this was an accurate assessment by Ko-Bayashi.  Lange-Bertalot (1993) has illustrated a similar looking diatom which he calls Hantzschia species cf. abundans cf. vivacior (Figs. 4-5).  S.E.M. examination of the specimens collected in this study indicates that the valves externally resemble Hantzschia vivacior (synonym H. vivax) and internally resemble Hantzschia abundans sensu Lange-Bertalot (1993).  Thus, it appears that this is a new species of Hantzschia, closely related to H. vivacior and H. abundans.

Morphology: Nitzschioid
