Description:

Valves elliptical-lanceolate with slightle prostrate ends (L 12-23 µm, W 4-6 µm, 24-28 striae in 10µm). RV : Axial area straight, linear. Raphe filiform with curved, opposed polar endings. Central area hemicircular, broadly widened towards the valve margin. ARV : similar axial and central area shape as in RV. In SEM, a very shallow slit is visible, running from the poles towards the central area.

Morphology: Monoraphid

Autecology:

Notes:

Common in soils and drier mosses.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1983), South Shetland Islands (Schmidt et al. 1990).In the Andes, Rumrich et al. (2000) also discovered a population of E. aretasii that looks however somewhat different from the Crozet population. We believe that the valves found on Ile de la Possession (and on Kerguelen) do represent the true E. aretasii as it was formerly described by Manguin.
