Description:
Valves elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate (L 8-15µm, W 3-4µm, 20 striae in 10µm). Transapical striae, alternating, consisting of one row of rounded areolae, placed in depressions between raised ribs. Axial area narrow, lanceolate. Marginal spines, often bifurcating, situated on the interstriae.

Notes:
Common in larger pools with lower specific conductance (<100µS/cm) where it can dominate the entire diatom flora. pH-optimum 6,7. Mostly found in benthic samples. Very rare in moss and soil samples.Antarctic Continent (Roberts & McMinn 1996), Campbell Island (Hickman & Vitt 1973), South Orkney Islands (Oppenheim 1990, Jones et al. 1993), Kerguelen (Larson 1978, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996).S. venter can easily be confused with F. maillardii but should be distinguished by its larger L/W ratio. In earlier ecological papers on Ile de la Possession (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1998b, 1999a&b) S. venter has been confused with Fragilaria construens var. subsalina (Hustedt) Hustedt and Fragilaria elliptica Schumann. After thorough (SEM) examination, all observed valves appeared to belong to S. venter.
