Description:
Valves linear, slightly concave in the middle with subcapitate ends (L 25-30µm, W 3-4µm, 15 striae in 10µm). The concavity in the middle can sometimes be absent. Striae parallel, alternating. Axial area fairly narrow. The sternum is clearly visible in the internal valve face, with alternating costae and cavities in which the striae are situated. Areolae slit-like with 2-3 pores. Apical porefield present.

Notes:
Common in larger lakes with high pH (optimum 9,2) and moderate specific conductance levels (200-400µS/cm). Mostly found attached to filamentous algae. Very rare in soil and moss samples.Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Le Cohu 1999), South Shetland Islands (Kawecka & Olech 1993).Further details on the morphology of this taxon can be found in Le Cohu (1988, 1999). In Van de Vijver & Beyens (1999a&b) S. alpestris has incorrectly been reported as Fragilaria neoproducta Lange-Bertalot and Fragilaria oldenburgiana Hustedt. Based on the SEM observations, all valves appeared to belong to S. alpestris.
