Description:
Valves linear, slightly convex with rounded apices. (L 11,5-20µm, W 3-4µm, 28-34 transapical striae in 10µm. RV: lanceolate axial area with filiform raphe, central area a small fascia. ARV: narrow longitudinal area, sometimes a little bit wider in the middle with an irregular central area, formed by shorter (and/or lacking) striae. A very distinct feature is the structure of the striae on the araphid valve, starting with a bacilliform marginal areola and terminating by 2, rarely 3, shorter areolae (Le Cohu & Maillard, 1983).

Notes:
Quite common in both open waterbodies with circumneutral to slightly acid pH and low specific conductance values and in wet moss vegetations where it can reach high abundances (up to 60%). Mean F-value is 3,8±1,8. Also common in very wet, slightly acid soils.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1983), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a), Macquarie Island (McBride et al. 1999).
