Valves elliptical-lanceolate with rounded ends. (L 8-12µm, W 2,5-4µm, 20-24 striae in 10µm). Striae generally moderate radiate. ARV: striae consist of two distinct rows of areolae near the valve margin reducing gradually to one row towards the axial area. RV: Axial area narrow with a filiform raphe. Central pores slightly thickened, moderately close together. Terminal fissures bent into opposite directions. Central area with 1-2 shortened median striae, more distant than the other striae. Internally, the central raphe pores are clearly bent into opposite directions.

Notes:

Locally common in wet mosses and soils and circumneutral lakes (e.g. Lac Perdu).South Orkney Islands (Jones 1993, Jones et al. 1993, Oppenheim 1994), South Shetland Islands (Björck et al. 1990, Schmidt et al. 1990).In Van de Vijver & Beyens (1998a, 1999a&b) attempts were made to identify this taxon. All valves, reported as Achnanthes pericava Carter or Achnanthes conspicua Mayer belong to this new species as has been demonstrated by a detailed SEM-study.
