Description:
Valves lanceolate with broadly rounded apices. (L 11,5-25 µm, W 3-4,5µm, 18 20 sligthly radial striae in 10µm, each containing two transapical rows of areolae). RV: axial area lanceolate, not widened in the middle. Raphe branches slightly curving near the central area, terminating in the same direction but opposite to the terminal fissures. Most distinguishing feature however, are the two striae in the central area that are more spaced than the others leaving a distinct gap in LM. ARV: characterised by an asymmetrical central area with the typical sinusoidal mark on one side. Internally, the convex part of this marking covers most of it like a small roof, opening towards the valve margin. Axial area much wider than on the raphid valve.

Notes:
Very common in wet mosses (mean F-value 3,8±1,5), fairly common in small brooklets with a lot of submerged vegetation. In soils, the taxon seems to prefer wet, acid soils with higher specific conductance values (up to 350µS/cm).Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Le Cohu & Maillard 1983, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), Macquarie Island (McBride et al. 1999).
