Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 25-38 µm
Width: 7-10 µm
Striae: 11-13 in 10 µm on the pseudoraphe valve; 13-16 in 10 µm on the raphe valve

Description:

Valve outline linear elliptical with rounded ends. Raphe valve: Narrow axial area, except at the central area where a slight thickening of silica occurs. Raphe straight to slightly arching. Striae radiate throughout. Pseudoraphe valve: Linear axial area, strongly displaced towards one margin. Pseudoraphe valves possess a distinct thickened nodule near each distal pole, which may be a porefield. Striae parallel in the center, becoming radiate towards the poles.

Morphology: Monoraphid
Distribution: Antarctic endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

Kellogg et al. (1980) described Achnanthes taylorensis from the McMurdo Dry Valleys.  Previous researchers identified A. brevipes var. intermedia from this region (West and West, 1911; Ko-Bayashi, 1963; Baker, 1967; Brady, 1977; Seaburg et al., 1979).  Compared with A. brevipes var. intermedia, finer striae, lack of a central constriction, and absence of produced poles distinguish A. taylorensis as a unique species.  Because of these characteristics, A. taylorensis appears to more closely resemble A. coarctata than A. brevipes var. intermedia.

Original Type Description

Author: Kellogg et al. 1980
Length: 31-33 µm
Width: 8.8-9.3 µm
Striae: 12 in 10 µm

Original Description:

Achnanthes, not A. brevipes var. intermedia; similar to A. coarctata; valves linear-elliptical with rounded poles; axial area of raphe valve extremely narrow; central area broad and stauroneiform; striae punctate, about 12 radiate striae in 10 µm on the raphe valve, about 13 curving striae in 10 µm on the rapheless valve. Length 31-33 µm; width 8.8-9.3 µm. Kellogg et al. comment that this taxon was originally noted from moraines on Cape Royds and from Clear Lake (Ross Island) (West & West, 1911) as A. brevipes var. intermedia. Holotype: C14-76-1 ANSP Locality: delta along Delta Stream 19.6 m asl
