Description:
Valves cylindrical, forming long chains (Diameter 10-45µm, Mantle height 5 10µm, Diameter/Mantle height ratio <1). Valve mantle relatively small, clearly punctated with areolae ranged in parallel, straight rows. Linking spines present but relatively small. The valve face is ornamented with fine areolae, located in radiate striae. Between the longer striae, shorter rows of poroids are found. The pore-free area in the middle contains 3-5 rounded carinoportulae.

Notes:
Common in soil samples but never in high abundances. Prefers dry, relatively acid soils with higher specific conductance values and increased nutrient input. In water samples almost absent. In moss samples, only present in dry mosses.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), Crozet (Pierre 1977), South Shetland Islands (Björck et al. 1993), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997a).
