Description:
Valves variable in shape: from elliptical to lanceolate and even cuneate with sharply rounded ends (L 5,9-9,4µm, W 2-3,1µm, 16-20 striae in 10µm). Striae alternate, parallel in the middle, slightly radiate near the ends. Axial area linear to lanceolate. In SEM view, the two apical porefields are quite distinct at each valve end. The valve face is separated from the mantle by a small bar with simple linking spines. Striae are sunk below the virga level, interrupted by spines. Striae are composed of two rows of areolae, covered by an external membrane.

Notes:
Only found in two small pools and one larger lake in the Vallée des Géants with mean pH of 6,3 and a very high specific conductance (>2000µS/cm). Also observed attached to mosses growing in those waterbodies. No observations made in soil samples.Kerguelen (Le Cohu 1988).Often confused in counts with Staurosira pinnata. More morphological details are given in Sabbe & Vyverman (1995).
