Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 16.5-40 µm
Width: 3-4 µm
Striae: 14-16 in 10 µm

Description:

Valves linear with attenuated and slightly capitate ends. Raphe straight, simple, and very thin. Striae parallel and equally spaced throughout. Keel puncta are difficult to distinguish under the L.M., but appear to be 5-7 in 10 µm.

Morphology: Nitzschioid
Distribution: South Victorialand endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

This species originally was described by West and West (1911) as Fragilaria tenicollis var. antarctica. Fukushima (1964) later called the species Nitzschia antarctica, but this choice was a junior homonym for a different diatom described by Okuno (1954). As a result, Kellogg et al. (1980) renamed this diatom N. westii in honor of West and West. 90). INA website as of last update to this entry refers to nitzschia westii, not nitzschia westiorum.

Original Type Description

Author: West & West 1911
Length: 37 µm
Width: 3 µm
Striae: 16 in 10 µm

Original Description:

Var. polis valvæ valde productis et leviter subcapitatis; stiis non radiatis, 16 in 10 µm. Long. valv. 37 µm; lat 3 µm. Hab. Clear Lake. In outward form the valves were very similar to F. tenuicollis var intermedia (Grun.) V. Heurck [=F. intermedia Grun.; V. Heurck, Synops. Diat. Belg. t.45, f.9], but they did not possess the median unilateral central area which is characteristic of that variety.
