Length: 5-18µm
Width: 2-3µm
Striae: 10-12 fibulae in 10µm

Description:

Valves elliptical to linear-elliptical with obtusely rounded ends (L 5-18µm, W 2 3µm, 10-12 fibulae in 10µm). Fibulae quite large, the two in the middle more spaced than the others. Transapical striae in LM quite resolvable, 25-30 in 10µm.

Notes:

Fairly common in mosses and freshwater habitats sampled in the area of Pointe Basse indicating higher pH and specific conductance values.South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a), Maritime Antarctic Region (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997b), James Ross Island (Björck et al. 1995).Sometimes considered to be only a variety of N. frustulum (Kützing) Grunow. The exact taxonomical position is still doubtful.
