Description:

Frustule cylindrical. Valves convex or concave (diameter 16-40µm) Valve face with structure of irregularly scattered puncta with raised rims. Puncta denser in the marginal area than in the central area, continuing on the first part of the mantle face. Mantle face heavily silicified with thick plates. Large stellate spines placed around the valve margin. Internally, several shallow marginal cavities are present. One central curved labiate processus present.

Morphology: Centric
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Present in soil samples taken from small scratches on cliffs bordering the coast and in several small caverns near the base.So far only found on Ile de la Possession. The only locality in the world where C. kapitiana, was found, is a small island near the coast of New Zealand. No other mondial observations were made!Unmistakable with the large spines and the alternating darker and lighter spots on the mantle face. Confusion with taxa from the genus Orthoseira and Melosira is almost impossible due to the lack of the so-called carinoportulae and the presence of the labiate processus and the cavities on the valve interior. Further details on the structure and separation of Cavernosa from Melosira can be found in Stidolph (1990).
