Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 30-45µm
Width: 2-4µm
Striae: 10-13 fibulae in 10µm

Description:

Valves lanceolate with sometimes parallel margins. Ends clearly capitate (L 30 45µm, W 2-4µm, 10-13 fibulae in 10µm). Fibulae irregularly placed on the raphe keel, usually the two in the middle are more spaced than the others. Transapical striae almost not visible in LM, 30-35 in 10µm).

Morphology: Nitzschioid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Fairly common in terrestrial mosses (mean F-value 4,2 ± 1,4). Common in small, acid (5,2-6,6) pools with low specific conductance (<150µS/cm) and nutrient values (phosphate <0,03mg/l).First record for the (Sub-)Antarctic Region. The population observed on Ile de la Possession shows affinities with N. tubicola but the spacing and position of the middle fibulae makes this identification somewhat unclear. Several valves however, have been observed with the middle fibulae not more spaced than the others, a feature that is considered to be uncommon within N. tubicola. The affinity with N. recta Hantzsch is doubtful due to different dimensions (length, width, number of fibulae and striae in 10µm). Therefore the connection with N. tubicola seems more logical. Detailed SEM-based comparisons between the Crozet-population and what is believed to be true N. tubicola should clarify this uncertainty.
