Description:

Valves mostly broad-lanceolate with capitate ends. Relatively small but quite wide morphotype (L 12-43µm (mean 24,2µm), W 3,3-5,7µm (mean 4,9µm), mean L/W ratio 4,9). All observed valves showed a typical asymmetrical swelling, interrupting on one side the normal striation pattern and extending out of the normal valve outline. No such asymmetrical swelling was found in the other morphotypes.

Common in small pools with pH-optimum 6,9.Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region.Le Cohu (1999), based on earlier work of Bourrelly & Manguin (1954) and Le Cohu & Maillard (1986), has discussed Fragilaria vaucheriae and its separation from F. capucina. He justified this separation by discussing the number of striae. However, as has been shown in Fig. 1, no difference in number of striae could be found between the recorded vaucheriae-sippen and other members belonging to the capucina-complex. Moreover, when re-examining the figures shown in Le Cohu (1999), the number of 14 striae in 10µm is never observed. Therefore we still consider this morphotype to be kept within the capucina-complex, but it is clear that we are dealing with a separate morphotype that shows high affinities with the original vaucheriae (except for the number of striae).
