Description:
Valve elliptical lanceolate with subcapitate ends. Raphe straight, with simple central endings and hooked distal endings. Raphe surrounded by two thickened ribs which are somewhat contracted near the central area. Puncta are round and form striae that radiate throughout the valve face.

Notes:
Kellogg et al. (1980) described a species from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, which they named Navicula airdevronsixii. Spaulding et al. (1997) examined the type slide of that material at ANSP and found the the taxon is synonymous with N. naumannii, with only difference being that the species described by Kellogg et al. (1980) is slightly smaller than the specimens encountered in this study. Navicula naumanii was transferred to the genus Fallacia (Round et al. 1990). INA website as of last update to this entry refers to synonym, not microcostatus naumannii.
