Description:

Valves cylindrical (Diameter 8-20µm, Mantle height 5-8µm). Frustules interconnected by large, irregular spines, covering the entire valve face, leaving a small hyaline area in the middle. No sulcus or collum present.

Notes:

Found in several drier soil samples. The highest concentration was reached in sample BA61 taken from a small cave in the Pointe Basse region.Taxon described from Madagascar. So far also found on Ile Amsterdam and Ile Saint-Paul (situated in the Indian Ocean) (Van de Vijver, personal observation).
