Description:

Frustules are most often observed in girdle view. Frustules consist of 2 hemispherical valves, joined by linking spines. Striae are visible.

Morphology: Centric
Distribution: Antarctic endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

This taxon occurs rarely in the Dry Valleys. It is distinct from other forms of marine Melosira and freshwater Aulacoseira. The species is not known to form filaments of frustules linked together, as in many members of those two genera. Rather, M. charcotti is composed of two hemispherical valves. The similarity to the initial valves that follow an auxospore in Melosira and Aulacoseira suggests that this diatom retains one portion of the lifecycle (the initial valves) as its prediminant form. The species has also been reported on melt pools on the surface of sea ice in McMurdo Sound.
