James Ross Island

Antarctic Peninsula      Area ID: 7

Description

Located near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, James Ross Island (64° 10' S, 57° 45' W) is an ice-capped volcanic island in the Weddell Sea. The highest point, Mount Haddington, is a volcano with an elevation of approximately 1600 m. While over 75% of the island is covered by the ice cap, several ice-free areas are present to the north and west. Terrestrial vegetation is sparse and is restricted to bryophyte and lichen communities, which non-marine diatoms are associated. Recent work has documented close to 50 diatom species from James Ross Island.
