Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 17–35 µm
Width: 6–8 µm
Striae: 16–21 in 10 µm

Description:

Valves lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate. Smaller valves becoming rhombic-lanceolate. Apices slightly rostrate-capitate in longer valves; whereas, in middle-sized specimens, ends usually not protracted but broadly rounded. Valve length 17–35 µm, valve width 6–8 µm. Axial area relatively wide and almost linear. Central area forming a slightly wedge shaped stauros, bordered near the valve face margin by one series of small, rounded areolae. One rounded to weakly transapically elongated stigma present, located rather isolated in the central area. Raphe branches straight to weakly curved. Central raphe endings short, but clearly deflected opposite to the stigma-bearing valve side. Central raphe pores simple. Terminal raphe fissures very short to absent, terminating before the last row of areolae in simple pores. Transapical striae radiate throughout, 16–21 in 10 µm, consisting of two to four small, rounded areolae. Marginal areolae larger and more transapically elongated on the side opposite the stigma but not on the other side. Internally, poroids of the valve face occluded by hymenes. Internal stigma opening consisting of almost rounded, irregularly lipped slit.

Notes:

Luticola australomutica has long been identified as Luticola mutica s.s. but can however be separated from L. mutica s.s. by differences in raphe structure and valve outline. Luticola mutica s.s. has typically strongly hooked central raphe endings; whereas, L.australomutica only has slightly deflected endings. Luticola cohnii is smaller (12–20 µm vs 17–35 µm) and has a more elliptical valve outline. The stigma in the latter species is located at the end of a short series of areolae; whereas, in L. australomutica, the stigma is distinctly isolated. Luticola nelidae has a different raphe structure with bent central endings and elongated terminal fissures. Luticola goeppertiana (Bleisch) Mann shows a similar valve outline but has a typical transapically elongated stigma. Luticola dismutica (Hustedt) Mann has more convex margins and clearly subcapitate apices. Navicula imbricate Bock lacks an isolated stigma and has only very weakly (almost invisibly) deflected central raphe endings.

Striae: 16–21 in 10 µm

Original Description:

Valvae lanceolatae ad ellipticas-lanceolatas. Valvae minores saepe rhombeae-lanceolatae. Apices leviter subrostrate in valves longioribus sed non protracti in valvis medianis. Longitudo 17–35 µm, latitudo 6–8 µm. Area axialis potius angusta. Area centralis formans staurum leviter cuneatam. Ad marginem una series areolarum rotundarum adest. Stigma solitaria punctiformis vel leviter transapicaliter elongata adest. Rami raphis recta vel leviter curvata extremis centralibus curtis claro deflexis opposite stigma poris centralibus indistinctis. Fissurae terminales raphis curtissimae, terminantes ante striam extremam. Striae transapicales omnino radiatae, 16–21 in 10 µm. Luticola mutica satis differt structura raphis.
