Valves elliptical-rhombic to broadly elliptical(-lanceolate) with broadly rounded ends (L 6,5 15µm, W 3,5-6µm, 20-24 striae in 10µm). Axial area very narrow, linear. Central area large, rectangular, almost always reaching the valve margins. Sometimes, several shortened striae are present. A solitary, rounded, stigma is always present on the secondary side. Raphe filiform, almost straight with weakly deflected central and terminal fissures and indistinct central pores. Transapical striae radiate throughout the entire valve.

Notes:

Only found in some relatively wet (50-60%) soil samples taken near the coastline or in small caves. The accompanying diatom flora points to more brackish conditions.Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region. The valves shown do not belong to Luticola mutica s.s. and might represent a new species. Until further investigation has been done, we will consider them as aff. mutica.
