Observations
Observations: | Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito |
---|---|
Length: | 6-19 µm |
Width: | 3-5 µm in the center |
Striae: | 30-36 in 10 µm |
Description:
Valve linear, strongly gibbous in the middle portion; poles slightly swollen and rounded. Axial area small and linear. Central area wide, generally rounded, and often with a thickening of the valve beneath the central area (see Round et al., 1990 for SEM illustrations of this feature). Raphe straight with simple proximal raphe ends. Striae linear and composed of elongate puncta. Striae may difficult to see in the light microscope.
Morphology: | Naviculoid |
---|---|
Distribution: | Antarctic endemic |
Autecology:
Notes:
The strongly swollen central portion of the valve separates this diatom. Formally called Diadesmis perpusilla Grunow, and revised in light of SEM observations 5 August 2014.
