---|---|
Length: | 6-20 µm |
Width: | 2-4 µm |
Striae: | 30-36 in 10 µm |
Description:
Valve linear, slightly gibbous in the center; poles somewhat swollen and rounded. Axial area small or indistinct. Central area wide, generally rounded, and often with a thickening of the valve beneath the central area (see Round et al., 1990 for SEM illustrations of this feature). Raphe straight with simple endings. Striae linear and composed of elongate puncta.
Morphology: | Naviculoid |

Distribution: | Widespread |

Notes:
The raphes of this diatom are often filled with silica, producing valves that, under the light microscope appear to lack a raphe system. This taxon is often seen in girdle view, chains of many cells linked together as filaments. This taxon was formally identified as Diadesmis contenta, and revised in light of SEM observations on 5 August 2014.
