Description:

Valves linear-lanceolate with broadly rounded, weakly protracted ends (L 11-22µm, W 4,5-6µm, 8-10 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area slightly widened. The bordering striae are somewhat shorter. Raphe filiform with closely spaced, expanded pores. Terminal pores distinct. Transapical striae radiate in the middle, convergent towards the poles. Areolae not resolvable in LM.

Notes:

H. hungarica was found in relatively dry (F-value V) moss samples and lake samples with higher pH (>8) and high specific conductance values (>1400µS/cm). The marine influence (by seaspray or marine animal input) seems to benefit this taxon. This is consistent with the overall ecology of the genus (Lange-Bertalot 2001).South Shetland Islands (Björck et al. 1993, Kawecka et al. 1998), South Orkney Islands (Oppenheim 1990, Jones et al. 1993, Jones 1993, Jones & Juggings 1995), King George Island (Schmidt et al. 1990)
