Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 31-39µm
Width: 8-10µm
Striae: 10-14 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear to linear-oval, nearly naviculoid, with almost parallel margins, clearly heteropolar (L 31-39µm, W 8-10µm). Largest width above the middle. Head poles protracted and broadly rounded. Foot poles clearly protracted and rounded but narrower than head poles. Axial area narrow, linear. Central area unilaterally elongated due to the shortening of 1 (rarely 2) striae. Stigma, internally slit-like, close to the not shortened stria. Raphe weakly lateral, arcuate with slightly expanded central pores. Internally, the central endings are hooked. Transapical striae parallel or weakly radiate in the middle to moderately radiate towards the poles, 10-14 striae in 10µm. Areolae resolvable in LM.

Notes:

Pointe Basse (Grande Coulée), Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BM287 (coll. date 4/1/1998).Fairly uncommon on Ile de la Possession. Mostly found in wet, non-submerged mosses. Less common in open water samples and soils.Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001).Le Cohu & Maillard (1986) have described Gomphonema angustatum var. aequalis f. kerguelensis Maillard. Based on a detailed SEM-analysis, this taxon clearly differs from G. angustatum var. aequale and shows more affinities with the group around G. affine and G. insigne. Therefore we raise this taxon to species level and describe it independently with a new type.
