Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 24-27µm
Width: 5-5,5µm
Striae: 10-14 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves clavate-lanceolate, weakly heteropolar. Largest width in the middle with slightly protracted, rounded head pole and cuneately narrowed footh pole. (L 24 27µm, W 5-5,5µm, 10-14 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area transapically elongated to one side due to the shortening of one stria. Transapical striae on the other side more spaced in the middle. Stigma close to the longest stria in the middle, next to the central raphe pores. Striae strongly radiate, more parallel towards the poles. Individual areolae in LM not resolvable. Raphe almost straight, filiform with weakly marked central pores.

Morphology: Cymbelloid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Bollard, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BW184 (coll. date 25/12/1997).Largest frequency found in sample BW184, taken from a circumneutral lake with low specific conductance and nutrient values. Sometimes confused with G. exilissimum. So far only found on Ile de la Possession.Bears some resemblance to G. cymbelliclinum Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot but lacks the more ‘cymbelloid’ outline and the clearly deflected poles, which have never been observed within the population of Ile de la Possession. Might also be confused with G. exilissimum (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot & Reichardt but differs in striation pattern and number of striae in 10µm. G. sarcophagus Gregory presents the same form of striation but has a different valve outline.
