Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 14,5-21,5µm
Width: 4,5-6µm
Striae: 10-18 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves weakly clavate, sometimes even lanceolate-elliptical. The largest width is found above the middle. The head poles are usually slightly protracted and flatly rounded while the foot poles are more or less sharply narrowed (L 14,5-21,5µm, W 4,5-6µm, 10-18 striae in 10µm). Axial area linear, narrow. Central area unilaterally weakly elongated due to 1 or 2 shortened striae (sometimes striae are not shortened!). Raphe lateral to sometimes filiform with almost unmarked terminal and central endings. Transapical striae moderately radiate to parallel. Individual areolae sometimes resolvable in LM but most of the times impossible to see. Stigma, when present, close to longest stria in the middle.

Morphology: Cymbelloid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Quite common on Ile de la Possession, but never reaching high frequencies. Sometimes confused with G. exilissimum. In soils, almost no observations were made. Seems to prefer lakes and pools with higher specific conductance and nutrient values (influenced by animal input).Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region.
