Striae: 21-25 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear with undulating margins and broadly rounded ends (L 27-37µm, W 4-6µm, 21-25 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, central area elliptical. Striae placed in relatively deep depressions, uniseriate, radiate in the middle, changing to convergent near the poles. Striae interrupted near the mantle face by a hyaline area, continuing as rows of large rounded individual areolae on the mantle face. Internally, the interruption is clearly visible. Raphe filiform with curved central endings and sharply hooked terminal fissures.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Rare on Ile de la Possession. Records from mosses and soils are scarce. The taxon reached its highest abundance in a small circumneutral lake. In soils, it was observed in slightly acid and semi-wet samples.Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al.1998a (misidentified as Caloneis aff. tenuis (Gregory) Krammer), 2001).Although quite similar to A. bryophiloides, A. linearis clearly differs from it by the structure of its striae, especially the transition from valve face to mantle (no interruption observed within A. bryophiloides). The lack of the capitate ends enforces the decision to raise this taxon to species level.
