Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 18-26µm
Width: 3-4,5µm
Striae: 35-45 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear-elliptical with clearly convex margins and obtusely rounded, rostrate to even subcapitate ends (L 18-26µm, W 3-4,5µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area very small or lacking. Transapical striae regularly spaced, strongly radiate becoming abruptly convergent to the poles (35-45 in 10µm). Raphe filiform, slightly curved. Central pores indistinct. Terminal fissures strongly deflected. Differs from A. bryophila by the more convex valve outline, the more regular striation pattern and the larger number of striae.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Vallée des Branloires, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BA004 (coll. date 18/12/97).Adlafia frenotii was only found in the Vallée des Branloires in low abundances (max. 6%) where it preferred relatively wet soils (up to 81% moisture) and semi-wet mosses. Two occurrences have been reported from slightly acid (pH 6,3-6,5) lakes in the Vallée des Branloires.Found on Ile de la Possession and Kerguelen (Van de Vijver et al. 2001).This new taxon closely resembles A. bryophila but can be differentiated by the higher number of striae in 10µm, the more convex outline (different L/W ratio) and the more regular striation pattern. In LM, the striae are hardly visible in A. frenotii while in A. bryophila, striae are always clearly observable.
