Description:
Valves with weakly concave ventral side and convex dorsal side with 2-5 (8) evenly spaced undulations (L 10-32µm, W 2,5-3,5µm, 17-21 striae in 10µm). Sometimes, the ventral side appears also slightly undulated, especially in larger valves. Apices clearly capitate and broadly rounded. Distal nodules close to the apices. Terminal raphe endings slightly curved, ending before the pole.

Notes:
Quite common in wet moss samples (mean F-value 3,5 ± 1,6). Fairly common in soils showing a broad range in pH, moisture and nutrient conditions. Quite common in small acid pools with low specific conductance values. Valves with more than 7 undulations did not present a different ecology.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a), Crozet (Pierre 1977).In several samples, valves with more than 7 dorsal undulations have been found. Since this larger number is the only difference that might separate these populations from the 'typical' E. muscicola var. muscicola, we decided not to create a separate variety. Further research should clarify whether this is correct.
