Description:

Valves elliptical to linear with parallel or slightly convex margins and obtusely rounded ends (L10-34µm, W5-7µm, 19-21 striae in 10µm). Axial area elliptical-lanceolate, sometimes quite wide (fig14). Raphe filiform with expanded central endings, slightly bent to one side. Terminal fissures first curving in the same direction, then returning to the valve midline and continuing to the valve ends. In girdle view this taxon appears rectangular with a typical flat septum in the middle. Septum with three large rounded or rectangular perforations.

Notes:

Diatomella is frequently present in samples from Ile de la Possession and seems to be quite common on the island. Most of the observations were done in dry mosses and soil samples with a slightly acid pH (6,1). Records from waterbodies are scarcer and refer to small drying pools with higher electrolyte contents.Reported as balfouriana: Crozet (Pierre 1977), Kerguelen (Germain 1937) Macquarie Island (Bunt 1954, McBride et al. 1999), South Shetland Island (Schmidt et al. 1990, Björck et al. 1991), Campbell Island (Hickmann & Vitt 1973). Reported as hustedtii: Crozet (Pierre 1977), Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1978, Le Cohu 1983, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), Horseshoe Island (Wasell & Hakansson 1992), South Shetland Islands (Schmidt et al. 1990).Manguin (in Bourrelly & Manguin 1954) discussed the differences between balfouriana and the newly created taxon hustedtii. However, when examining a large population of both balfouriana and hustedtii following the reported features, no clear differences can be found, resulting more or less in a morphological continuum between both taxa. Therefore, we suggest to use hustedtii as a younger synonym of balfouriana. This point of view has already been argued by Moser et al. (1995).
