Description:
Valves linear with parallel margins and (sub-)capitate ends (L 14-20µm, W 2,5 3,5µm, 30-38 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area small, bordered by irregularly spaced, shortened striae. Striae uniseriate, in the middle strongly radiate changing abruptly to convergent near the poles. Raphe filiform with slightly curved central endings. Terminal fissures sharply hooked into the same direction.

Notes:
The highest abundances (up to 50%) are observed in relatively wet moss samples and soil samples. The mean F-value for moss moisture is 4,2±1,4 for the valves that formerly belonged to Navicula bryophila and 3,3±1,2 for the Navicula maillardii valves. In soil samples, it has been found in slightly acid (mean pH 6,17), nutrient-poor soils. A. bryophila is less common in lakes, rivers and pools. Valves of N. bryophila are recorded from slightly acid lakes whereas N. maillardii valves occurred in circumneutral to slightly alkaline pools.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Germain 1982, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Orkney Islands (Jones et al. 1993), South Shetland Islands (Schmidt et al. 1990), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a), Macquarie Island (McBride et al. 1999), Horseshoe Island (Wasell & Håkansson 1992).Apart from the more capitate outline, no differences in structure could be found between N. maillardii Germain and N. bryophila Petersen. Although there seems to be a small difference in ecology, both are included within Adlafia bryophila.
