Description:

Valves elliptical to linear with broadly rounded ends. Usually slightly concave (L 4-12µm, W 2-3µm, 40-50 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area stauroform, reaching the valve margins. Transapical striae parallel, interrupted centrally. Raphe filiform, straight with distinct T-shaped central and terminal endings.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Occurring in low numbers in relatively dry soils with low specific conductance, phosphate and nitrogen values.Very widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region (due to taxonomical problems it is not clear whether they all indicate D. contenta s.s.).Diadesmis contenta used to be a highly polymorphic taxon. Detailed analysis by Moser et al. (1998) pointed out that in fact D. contenta s.s. is quite uniform and well defined. Other Diadesmis-forms, formerly placed within D. contenta should therefore be considered as new taxa. In Van de Vijver & Beyens (1999a&b), D. contenta s.l. was considered. Now we know that in fact we are dealing with much more taxa. Most of them are described as new ones (Le Cohu & Van de Vijver (subm.), Van de Vijver et al. (subm.). In some samples, valves of D. contenta were found without the T-shaped raphe endings, being the only feature that differs between the two populations. Since this feature is very hard to resolve in LM, we decided not to put these valves into a new taxon, but include them within D. contenta.
