Description:
Valves almost linear to linear-lanceolate with slightly protracted to subcapitate ends (L 13-22µm, W 4-5µm, 20-21 striae in 10µm). Axial area very narrow. No central area present. Transapical striae parallel, convergent near the poles. Raphe filiform with almost unexpanded terminal and central pores. The foramina are apically elongated which is clearly visible in SEM.

Notes:
Fairly uncommon on Ile de la Possession. The highest abundance was reached in samples from the Lac Perdu. This taxon seems to prefer larger lakes with almost circumneutral conditions (pH 6,3-7,5) and variable conductivity values (between 60 and 2000µS/cm).Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986), Horseshoe Island (Wasell & Hakansson 1992, Wasell 1993), South Shetland Islands (Hakansson & Jones 1994).The population we found on Ile de la Possession, is usually a bit larger than generally described in the literature. Since all other characters match entirely, we decided to name them C. submolesta. In Van de Vijver & Beyens (1999a), the larger valves of this taxon were named Navicula halophila. Detailed SEM-research however pointed out that they belong to C. submolesta.
