Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 30-35µm
Width: 6,5-8µm
Striae: 24-30 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves lanceolate, acutely rounded with protracted, rostrate to subcapitate ends (L 30-35µm, W 6,5-8µm, 24-30 striae in 10µm). Raphe filiform, straight, proximal ends deflected slightly to one side. Central pores indistinct, somewhat distant. Axial area narrow, almost linear. Central area completely absent, the axial area can be slightly widened in the middle. Striae almost parallel, convergent at the poles.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Crique de Noël, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BW067 (coll. date 12/12/1999).C. salsuginosa was only recorded in several small pools, lying close to the sea. These pools are usually quite ephemeral and largely influenced by seaspray resulting in higher pH (8) and conductivity- (±300µS/cm) values. No observations were made in moss- and soil samples. So far only recorded from Ile de la Possession.C. salsuginosa looks somewhat similar to Craticula riparia (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot but differs by its length and the number of striae.
