Notes:
Rare in moss and water samples. Frequencies higher in soil samples. Seems to prefer acid to circumneutral wet soils with higher specific conductance values (>350µS/cm).Macquarie Island (Bunt 1954, Evans 1970, McBride et al. 1999), Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Georgia (Van de Vijver, personal observation). In one sample, a small Stauroneis-like taxon was found, showing some affinities with S. kriegeri (Pl.65/7-10) but they could be identified as Staurophora anuschkae Witkowski, a brackish-marine taxon found in Gdansk. It is presented here since confusion with S. kriegeri is possible.
