Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 70-90µm
Width: 14-16µm
Striae: 20-25 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves lanceolate with protracted, rounded ends (L 70-90µm, W 14-16µm, 20-25 striae in 10µm). Axial area fairly broad, linear to linear-lanceolate. Central area a small, sometimes asymmetrical fascia. Raphe filiform to narrowly lateral with straight central endings, distinct central pores and ?-shaped terminal fissures.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Fairly common in samples from ditches and small pools with slightly acid to circumneutral pH but elevated specific conductance values (200-650µS/cm). Almost entirely absent from soils and moss samples.(S. phoenicenteron) Kerguelen (Reinsch 1879, Bourrelly & Maillard 1954, Larson 1974, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), Crozet (Pierre 1977), Macquarie Island (Evans 1970, McBride et al. 1999), King George Island (Opalinski 1972, Schmidt et al. 1990), South Shetland Islands (Björck et al. 1993, Jones 1995), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a).Can be confused with S. gracilis Ehrenberg and S. subgracilis Lange-Bertalot & Krammer but a detailed examination of the central raphe endings clearly separates S. aff. phoenicenteron from the other two taxa. Observations of S. fluminea Patrick & Freese (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1999a&b) probably also indicate S. aff. phoenicenteron. It is however unclear with these valves clearly belong to phoenicenteron. A thorough study of more populations on Crozet should clarify this taxonomical problem.
