Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 12-20µm
Width: 3,5-5µm
Striae: 24-27 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves lanceolate to elliptical-lanceolate in smaller valves with broadly rounded, sometimes slightly subcapitate ends (L 12-20µm, W 3,5-5µm, 24-27 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area transapically enlarged, bordered by 3-4 slightly shortened striae. Raphe filiform, curved with clearly deflected central pores and hooked terminal fissures. Transapical striae in the middle strongly radiate (even sinusoidal) to moderately radiate towards the ends.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Crique de Noël, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BW079 (coll. date 12/12/1997).Found in several samples from larger lakes. Fairly common in relatively dry soils (40-50%) with low nutrient conditions. So far only found on Ile de la Possession. This taxon clearly presents all features of the genus Sellaphora. Conspecificity with S. subantarctica (see above) is unlikely due to the different valve outline (more tumid in the middle), the clearly curved raphe and the different striation pattern, especially near the central area.
