Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 9-23µm
Width: 3-4,5µm
Striae: 24-26 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear to linear-lanceolate with weakly subcapitate, rounded ends (L 9-23µm, W 3 4,5µm, 24-26 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area large, almost rectangular, bordered by several very short striae. Raphe filiform, straight with indistinct central pores and deflected terminal fissures. Transapical striae strongly radiate in the middle, slightly radiate towards the ends. In SEM, striae appear to be uniseriate.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Pointe de Bougainville, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample W540 (coll. date 17/11/1997).Rare in larger, slightly acid lakes with low nutrient and specific conductance values (<100µS/cm).So far only known from Ile de la Possession. This new Sellaphora species shows some affinities with Sellaphora disjuncta Hustedt but can be distinguished by the less capitate apices and the (usually) smaller size. Navicula joubaudii Germain has a similar valve outline but is smaller and shows biseriate striae.
