Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 30-40µm
Width: 6-7µm
Striae: 3-6 transapical costae in 10µm

Description:

Valves slightly dorsiventral, asymmetrically linear-lanceolate with a convex dorsal side and a straight ventral side (L 30-40µm, W (in the middle) 6-7µm, 3-6 transapical costae in 10µm, 1-4 striae in each intercosta chamber). The apices are sharply rounded, always deflected ventrally. The raphe system is completely eccentric, lying close to the dorsal valve margin, situated on a raised dorsal keel. The raphe slit is bordered by clear raphe ridges. External central raphe endings deflected towards the ventral side and slightly expanded. External polar raphe endings simple.

Morphology: Epithemioid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Present in soils and water samples but only in minor abundances. Does not seem to have clear ecological preferences in these samples. In mosses, sometimes quite abundant (>20%). Mean F-value 4,1±1,7.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001).Probably confused with Rhopalodia gibberula (Ehrenberg) O. Müller on Kerguelen since during two surveys on this island, no 'real' R. gibberula was found, only R. rupestris.
