Description:
Valves linear with parallel margins and rounded, sometimes slightly cuneate ends (L 90-110µm, W 14-15µm, 8-9 striae in 10µm). Axial area linear-lanceolate, relatively large (1/4 the width of the valve). Central area asymmetrical, rounded-elliptical, sometimes apically slightly elongated. Raphe lateral to semi-complex, undulating. Central endings laterally bent with small pores. Terminal fissures sickle-shaped ('viridis'-like (Krammer 2000)). Transapical striae weakly radiate in the middle, parallel (sometimes convergent) towards the poles. Narrow to moderately wide longitudinal bands present.

Notes:
Fairly common in larger, acid, oligotrophic lakes with low specific conductance values (<100µS/cm). Rare in moss vegetations and soil samples.Due to confusion with P. viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg, the older records are quite unreliable. It is possible, and even more likely, that viridiformis is quite common in the Subantarctic Region: Kerguelen (Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a).After a re-examination of the largest P. viridis-valves in the Crozet samples, apparently all belonged to P. viridiformis so former records of P. viridis on Crozet should be considered as large viridiformis valves.
