Description:
Valves linear to linear-lanceolate with convex margins and broadly rounded, slightly subrostrate ends (L 47-80µm, W 10-12µm, 15-17 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area an asymmetrical, almost rectangular, fascia. Raphe narrowly lateral with slightly deflected enlarged central pores. Terminal fissures sickle-shaped. Transapical striae almost parallel to weakly radiate in the middle, completely parallel towards the apices. The chambers in the striae are quite resolvable in LM.

Rare on Ile de la Possession. Found in wet mosses and circumneutral to alkaline soil samples, influenced by sea-spray or marine animals (higher specific conductance and chloride values).Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001).Manguin described this taxon as a variety of P. microstauron. However, the latter completely lacks the chambers in the striae, a features that is quite obviously present in the former var. subantarctica and also in the var. elongata (see below). Since no other taxon seems to present the same combination of characteristics, we decided to take the var. subantarctica and the var. elongata out of P. microstauron and create a new taxon P. australis to accommodate these two taxa. The dimensions, given in Bourrelly & Manguin (1954) have to be adjusted since after a thorough examination of P. subantarctica, valves can be longer and wider. Records of P. circumducta Manguin should also be included within P. subantarctica. The raphe structure, as observed by Bourrelly & Manguin (1954) can not be confirmed with SEM data from Ile de la Possession. Therefore, we believe that observations of P. circumducta on Ile de la Possession are in fact longer valves of P. australis.
