Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 60-95µm
Width: 15-18µm
Striae: 5-6 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear with parallel margins and broadly rounded, sometimes slightly subrostrate ends (L 60-95µm, W 15-18µm, 5-6 striae in 10µm). Axial area very narrow, linear. Central area rounded, asymmetrical in the middle due to the shortening of some striae on one side. Raphe moderately lateral, slightly arcuate. Central pores curved to one side, rounded. Terminal fissures sickle-shaped. Transapical striae broad, radiate in the middle, parallel to convergent near the apices. No longitudinal lines.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Common but in low frequencies in soil samples and drier mosses. Highest abundances were reached in soil samples near the coastline where the soil, consisting almost purely of volcanic sand was influenced by sea-spray. Rare in typical water habitats such as rivers and lakes. In mosses, both wet (F-value VI) mosses were inhabited.Kerguelen (Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997a). Other records possibly included in the records of P. borealis s.l..Fig5 on Plate 84 represents a very long specimen that shows all features of P. rabenhorstii but has a length of 123µm which is approx. 25% longer than the description in Krammer (2000). It is possible that it should be included within rabenhorstii.
