Description:
Valves linear with straight sides and protracted (sometimes capitate) ends (L 30-50µm, W 6-7µm, 13 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area rhombic, forming a broad fascia. Raphe filiform with drop-like central pores, clearly deflected towards the ventral side. Terminal fissures ?-shaped. Transapical striae radiate in the middle, convergent to even slightly sinuous near the poles. No longitudinal lines.

Notes:
Fairly common in terrestrial mosses and relatively dry soils.So far not reported from the (Sub-)Antarctic Region. Probably some records of P. anglica might in fact be P. pisciculus.Confused with P. microstauron (Ehrenberg) Cleve in Van de Vijver & Beyens (1998b, 1999a, 1999b).
