Rare, only found in some freshwater samples. Absent in soils and mosses.The distribution for this variety is hard to give since usually only P. microstauron is mentioned while this variety has only recently been described (Krammer 2000).Although the observed population has smaller individuals than given by Krammer (2000), we still believe that they belong to the variety rostrata.
