Description:

Valves elliptical-lanceolate with clearly protracted, broadly rounded ends (L 42 54µm, W 10-12µm, 14 striae in 10µm). Axial area linear-lanceolate, narrow. Central area a very large fascia, widening towards the valve margins. Raphe branches arcuate with large central pores. In SEM, central pores appear triangular. Internally, next to the central pores, two slit-like openings are present, identical to the ones in P. lundii Hustedt. The terminal fissures are abruptly hooked in the opposite direction of the central pores. Transapical striae radiate, convergent near the apices. No longitudinal lines.

Notes:

Fairly common in soils influenced by some sort of animal input. Common taxon in penguin rookeries, characterized by higher nutrient conditions (phosphate and ammonium), higher salinity values and higher specific conductance values. In open waterbodies only found in larger abundances (>10%) in a penguin pool near a large macaroni penguin rookery.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986), Crozet (Pierre 1977), Antarctic Peninsula (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997b), Macquarie Island (McBride et al. 1999).Might be confused with P. lundii Hustedt or (the newly created) P. bottnica Krammer but can easily be distinguished by its shape (rostrate, protracted ends).
