Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 80-130µm
Width: 22-32µm
Striae: 17-22 striae in 50µm

Description:

Valves linear-lanceolate to linear-elliptical with keel-like rounded, sometimes even slightly cuneately formed apices (L 80-130µm, W 22-32µm, 17-22 striae in 50µm). Axial area narrow (±1/6 of valve width), linear. Central area elliptical asymmetrically expanded. Raphe distinctly lateral with curved outer branches. Central pores large, droplike. Terminal fissures sickle-shaped. Transapical striae strongly radiate, smaller in the middle. Striae more and more convergent towards the poles. Unmistakable taxon due to its size and shape. No longitudinal lines.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Very rare on Ile de la Possession, found in several fairly dry (moisture <40%) soil samples but only in very low frequencies (<2%). Only 18 valves have been found in moss and water samples, so no clear ecological preferences can be given.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954), Crozet (Pierre 1977), Neuquen (Frenguelli 1942).There has been a lot of confusion about the taxonomical position of this large-sized taxon. Frenguelli (1942) described it as only a variety of alpina due to its size and the striation pattern but, as he stated, there are differences especially when comparing the more linear valve outline. Pierre (1977) considered this taxon to be a variety of P. lata (Brébisson) Rabenhorst, but he never argues why. After a thorough examination of valves that have been found on Kerguelen and on Crozet, the original name of P. kerguelensis should be maintained. This taxon is a lot smaller than P. alpina W. Smith, has more striae in 10µm and has different raphe structure. On the other hand, a transfer to P. lata should also be avoided due to differences in shape (lata is much more linear), size (different L/W ratio in lata) and raphe structure (especially the terminal fissures).
